Concert: Three Choirs Festival (Thursday 27 July 2017, 3.00 pm)
In the sixteenth century, England stood apart from the rest of the European mainland with a musical inheritance which was radically different. During the life of Henry VIII, English composers had produced huge and awe-inspiring settings of texts in honour of the Virgin Mary and these were the models for the mid-century writers Tallis, Sheppard and Mundy. This afternoon concert is a rare opportunity to hear four magnificent Tudor ‘symphonies’ in one concert. Full of colour and drama, they push the limits of invention and scoring and are in a league which European composers could not even imagine. Set in between are more modest ‘sorbets’ to allow the ear to rest and hear that the English could excel at miniature pieces as well.
