Concert: Bath Mozartfest

Date: Thursday 14 November 2013, 7.30 pm    Venue: St Mary's Church, Bathwick, Bath

English Genius – music by Tallis, Byrd and Benjamin Britten.

The 16th and the 20th century saw an amazing amount of vocal music being produced and sung in England. Thomas Tallis and William Byrd, business partners and colleagues but also close friends were the giants of vocal composition in the 16th century: Benjamin Britten was a colossus of the 20th century steeped in the English choral tradition. The concert opens with two of Tallis’ Psalm Tunes written for Archbishop Parker’s mid-sixteenth century metrical translation. Set against this simplicity is the opulent polyphony of his Missa Salve intemerata virgo and two anthems by Britten. Programme also includes Byrd’s Tribue Domine, a riot of energy and imagination celebrating the triumph of the Trinity, and Britten’s thoughtful, rather idyllic Flower Songs from 1950.
