Crying to the Lord in times of darkness has given rise to some of the most powerful music ever written. In a programme titled Out of the Deep, The Cardinall’s Musick and Andrew Carwood give voice to the austere beauty of Morales’s Requiem mass, a darkly sonorous and powerful setting of the sung portions of the Requiem Mass and one of his finest compositions. The programme also features English music of the utmost simplicity with Tye and Morley’s direct settings of the words of hope and release spoken by Simeon on his first meeting with Christ, alongside Byrd’s Tristia et anxietas and Tallis’ De lamentatione.
